May 1, 1988 - The 10-2 Men's Tennis team finished in a first place tie with Springfield College among Division II schools at the New England Intercollegiate Championship held at the University of Conn.  Naren Dhamodharan and Doug Mouch both had upset victories and advanced to the quarterfinals.  Dhamodharan and Dave Schreiner competed as double partners.  They lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual champions.


Freshman Fronts Stonehill's Post Season Push

It took the Stonehill College Men's Tennis team (16-5, 9-1 Northeast-10 Conference) a little over two hours to defeat the Saint Michael's College Purple Knights (8-7, 7-3 Northeast-10 Conference), 9-0.  Freshman Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) completed the Skyhawks' sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 win at second singles over Sean Steigerwald.  The first year stand-out finishes the regular season with a 14-5 overall record, 7-2 in the NE-10.

Earlier in the contest, Fayed teamed with Michael Mashkevich (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) to defeat Jon Lescure and Torr Terranova at first doubles competition, 8-4.  Mashkevich later defeated Lescure at first singles, 6-1, 6-4, for Stonehill's eighth win of the match.

Jason Allegretti (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) completed a 3-0 week with wins over Saint Anselm, Merrimack, and Saint Michael's College.  Today it was Craig Lindabery who suffered a 6-2, 6-1 defeat at the hands of Allegretti, who improved to his record to 15-4.   Allegretti's .789 winning percentage is tops among Skyhawks with at least 10 wins.

William Herchel (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug), who teamed with Allegretti for a 8-3 win at second singles, defeated Andrew Bolduc 6-2, 6-2 at fourth singles.  Herchel and Allegretti share the teams' most individual victories (15).

Mike Leone (Cataumet, Mass./Bourne) and senior John McGaffigan (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) each increased their undefeated Conference records with wins at fifth and sixth singles.  The pair are a combined 12-0 in singles competition.  At the third doubles spot, Leone and McGaffigan improved to 5-0 with a 8-2 win over Bolduc and Dave Besseser.

The win clinched the second seed the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament for the Skyhawks.  They will host the seventh seed on Tuesday in the Quarter Finals. The match is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
