March 31, 1981 - After a 24-5 season the year prior, Stonehill Baseball received top honors in the preseason coaches' poll.  The College's four first-place votes made them the favorites to capture the first-ever Northeast-7 Conference Championship.  However, Stonehill finished fifth with a 15-18 record.


Skyhawks to Host NCAA First and Second Rounds

Indianapolis, Ind. - Stonehill College (18-6, 9-1 Northeast-10 Conference) has been selected to host the first and second rounds of the upcoming NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship it was announced on Monday evening by the Division II Selection Committee.

The Skyhawks will host Concordia (N.Y.), Queens (N.Y.) and Philadelphia in the four team bracket with play beginning on Thursday, May 8 and concluding on Friday May 9.

Stonehill, who set a school-record with 18 wins this season, and received their highest seed ever - No. 4, will face Queens (11-6) on Thursday at 2 p.m. The other matchup of Concordia (N.Y.) and Philadelphia will take place at 11 a.m. The two winners will advance to the second round and meet at 11 a.m. on Friday.

Stonehill finished their regular season with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Bryant in the championship match of the Northeast-10 Tournament. The Skyhawks had been riding a six-match unbeaten streak, including a pair of 5-0 tournament victories over Southern New Hampshire and Merrimack.  The Purple and White are led by junior Jason Allegretti (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln), who owns a team-best 16-5 record at the third doubles spot.

Like the Skyhawks, the Knights of Queens College (N.Y.) were riding an impressive winning streak headed into the East Coast Conference Championship. They had won seven straight before falling to Concordia, 5-1, in the ECC Finals. The Knights, who have five freshmen on their varsity lineup, are led by senior Ariel Nassim and junior David Alper.

Concordia (N.Y.) College earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament after claiming the East Coast Conference Championship. Sophomore Alex Grubin, who competes at first singles, registered a 17-1 mark during the men's 16-2 regular season. Grubin and seniors Rodrigo Teixeria and Kirill Azovtsez have combined to go 51-3 this season.

Philadelphia University comes to Easton having won four of their last six matches. Two rookies, Tom McAvoy and Seppi Hutter, are among the team's top performers. McAvoy owns a team-best 14-6 overall record, 12-10 in doubles competition while Hutter has been as equally impressive, sporting an 11-3 individual record, 12-3 at doubles competition.
