Greyhounds clinch regular season series with Skyhawks to clinch three points

WORCESTER, Mass. (January 23, 2010) - Assumption College clinched the regular season series with Stonehill College to earn the three Northeast-10 Conference points between the two clubs with a 6-1 triumph in ice hockey action at Buffone Rink tonight.

Sophomore Pat O'Kane (Hollis, N.H./Bishop Guertin) and freshman Jaime Vona (West Seneca, N.Y./Saint Francis) both scored two goals to lead Assumption to the victory. Junior Patrick Fitzgibbons (Worcester, Mass./St. John's) added a goal and assist, while classmate Joshua Boissoneau (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) dished two assists for the Greyhounds. Freshman David Maiocco (Medford, Mass./Arlington Catholic) chipped in with a goal as well.

Sophomore goaltender Nick Blanchette (Stuart, Fla./Worcester Academy) made 43 saves in goal for Assumption, including 18 in the second period to help the Greyhounds extend their lead. Sophomore Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) posted 24 stops in two periods of play for Stonehill, including 15 in the opening frame, before giving way for junior Michael Manna (Framingham, Mass./Xaverian Academy) who made nine saves in the third period.

Junior Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial) scored the lone goal for Stonehill, with assists to senior captain Peter Roundy (Simsbury, Conn./Kimball Union) and junior Eric Scholl (Wilmington, Mass./Tilton School). The Skyhawks finished with a 44-39 advantage in shots on goal for the night, including 33-22 over the final two periods.

Assumption took an early lead, with Fitzgibbons opening the scoring just 2:15 into the contest. Vona doubled the Greyhounds lead 8:52 into the period. The Greyhounds broke the game open with three goals in the second period. O'Kane netted his first of the night on a 5-on-3 power play 3:58 into the stanza. The goal snapped a streak of 34-straight penalty kills for Stonehill dating back to a loss to UMass Boston on November 28.

Vona added his second of the night (fifth of the season) at 11:24, before O'Kane potted his second (18^th overall) with another power play marker at 14:36. Stonehill got a goal back with a shorthanded strike by Todesca 7:02 into the third period, before Maiocco rounded out the scoring with just 42-seconds remaining.

Stonehill (7-8-1, 1-3-0 NE-10) returns to the ice on Thursday when it hosts Wentworth Institute of Technology at the Foxboro Sports Center at 7 p.m. Assumption (9-8-0, 6-1-0 NE-10) visits Salve Regina University on Tuesday at 8:15 p.m.
