North Easton, Mass. - Junior Matt Hall (Springfield, Mass./Central) led four Stonehill players in double figures with 17 points as the host Skyhawks posted a 59-52 victory over Southern New Hampshire University at Merkert Gymnasium Wednesday night.
The Skyhawks improved to 15-10 and 11-7 in the Northeast-10 with the win, while the Penmen are now 12-12 and 9-10 in the league action.
Hall finished 7-for-9 from the floor and drained three of his five three point attempts. Freshman sharpshooter Vince Rosario (Perth Amboy, N.J./Cardinal McCarrick) added 13 points for the Skyhawks, which also got 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals from Randall Stallworth (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) and 10 points from A.J. Rudowitz (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe).
Gerald Carter totaled 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists for Southern New Hampshire, which also got 11 points and five assists from Chase Miller. Sam Carey and Fotis Lioutas added nine points apiece.
SNHU raced out to a 10-2 lead less than four minutes into the game and then built their advantage to 16-8 with 12:54 left in the first half. Stonehill answered with a 13-1 run to take a 21-17 lead with just under seven minutes to go in the first 20 minutes.
After taking a 31-28 lead into halftime, Stonehill quickly extended its lead to nine, 39-30, early in the second half following Nick Smith's (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) only basket of the game at the 15:20 mark.
SNHU whittled the lead down to six at 48-42, but Stonehill responded with seven unanswered points, capped by a Hall basket with 5:47 left to put the game away.
The Skyhawks shot 44 percent from the field, while holding the Penmen to just 40 percent, including a 5-for-21 showing from behind the arc.
Stonehill held the edge on the glass, 39-33, and with Rosario and freshman Mike Kernan (Shawnee, N.J.) doing most of the damage, the Skyhawks got 19 points and 14 rebounds from its bench.
Stonehill returns to action on Saturday with a crucial matchup scheduled at Assumption, a team that sits one game ahead of them in the Northeast-10 standings. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
