#4 Stonehill Runs Past Saint Anselm, 5-1
Hourihan nets two goals as Skyhawks bounce back from midweek loss
EASTON, Mass. (October 9, 2009) - Stonehill College, ranked fourth in this week's Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, erased an early deficit by scoring five-straight goals to post a 5-1 victory over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.
Senior forward Claire Hourihan (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) sparked the Stonehill comeback with a pair of goals, running her team-leading total to 16 - just four shy of her own single-season record set last season. Hourihan has now scored in seven-straight games for the Skyhawks and her 45 career goals are within eight of Caitlin Gleason's career program record of 53 set from 2004-07.
Senior All-American Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth), junior Lindsay Pinkham (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan Area) and sophomore Lauren Colligan (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia Central) also scored goals for Stonehill who has won 11 of it last 12 contests.
Saint Anselm struck first as sophomore Morgan Seney (Bow, N.H./Bow) scored her second goal of the season off a feed from junior Annie Heaney (East Kingston, N.H./Exeter) 12:30 into the contest.
Sophomore Lauren Colligan scored her first career goal to put the Skyhawks up 3-1. |
Freshman Lindsay MacDonald (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) finished with four saves over 61:07 in goal for Saint Anselm. Classmate Megan Sullivan (Braintree, Mass./Thayer Academy) played the final 8:53 and posted one stop. Junior Courtney Osier (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) played the full 70 minutes in goal for Stonehill and didn't register a save as the Skyhawks posted a 21-1 advantage in shots for the game and a 26-1 edge in penalty corners.
Stonehill finally came up with an answer for Seney's opening goal 3:36 before halftime when Hourihan worked a give and go with senior Stephanie Kott (Rutland, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) off a penalty corner and fired a shot past MacDonald. Hourihan put the Skyhawks up for good 9:21 into the second half when she knocked in a loose ball off a rebound on the far side from close range for her 16th goal of the season.
Colligan netted her first career goal just under 11-minutes later when she took a pass from sophomore Kathryn Nelson (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and knocked the ball in from close range at 55:13. The Skyhawks added two more goals in the final ten minutes to seal victory. Ladino netted her ninth of the season into an empty net off a rebound with 8:53 to play, before Pinkham scored her third of the fall off a penalty corner from juniors Courtney Foley (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield Memorial) and Lauren Gifford (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown).
Stonehill (11-3, 5-1 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it visits No. 5-ranked University of Massachusetts Lowell for a key Northeast-10 battle at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks are back home next Thursday to host Assumption College at 4 p.m. Saint Anselm (1-12, 0-6 NE-10) hosts UMass Lowell next Thursday at 4 p.m.
