New Haven, Conn. - Southern Connecticut State sophomore Sara Winterbottom scored the game-winning goal off a penalty corner at the end of the regulation to send the host Owls to a 3-2 win over Stonehill on Wednesday night.

Southern Connecticut scored on its only shot of the first half when Winterbottom came free on a partial breakaway and sent a shot past Stonehill goaltender Courtney Osier (South Dennis, Mass.).

12 minutes into the second stanza, the Owls added to their advantage when Whitney Martin took a feed from Kelly Anne McCafferty and rattled the back of the cage.

Stonehill got on the board less than two minutes later when Laura Nimon (Gardiner, Maine) and Kerri Sullivan (Goffstown, N.H.) teamed up on Nimon's second goal of the season.

A little more than three minutes later Sullivan provided the equalizer with help from sophomore Laura Noce (Sudbury, Mass.), who record the first point of her collegiate career on the assist.

The Skyhawks' momentum was short-lived however, as the Owls put on a flurry in the closing seconds of regulation, and it paid off when they were awarded a penalty corner. Stonehill then committed two fouls that resulted in additional penalty corner chances for the Owls, and they cashed in on the third try.

Ann Berry pushed the ball out to Molly Daniels, who sent the ball towards the goal, where Winterbottom knocked it home.

Osier made one save in goal for Stonehill, while SCSU's Lauren Zarrella turned away five shots.

Now 0-4 overall and 0-3 in Northeast-10 action, Stonehill will look to secure its first win of the season on Saturday when they entertain Bentley at 12 p.m.
