Sousa's OT Goal Shocks Skyhawks, 2-1
Easton, Mass. - Senior reserve Jennifer Sousa scored the game-winning goal with a little more than five minutes remaining in the first overtime to lift visiting Southern Connecticut State to a 2-1 win over host Stonehill at W.B. Mason Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The win for SCSU marked the second time this season they have defeated Stonehill in dramatic fashion. In their first meeting of the season in New Haven, the Owls scored a goal with no time left to take a 3-2 win.
Sousa, who had entered the game less than a minute before, gives the Owls a one game lead in the win-loss column in the Northeast-10 standings over the Skyhawks, but an actual two-game edge due to SCSU sweeping the regular season series.
The game was filled with action almost from the outset but neither team could score in the first 35 minutes. Things changed moments into the second half, however, as Molly Daniels scored her first goal of the season for the Owls at the 36:26 mark.
Stonehill turned up the pressure, controlling the ball for a good portion of the second half and eventually broke through on their 18th penalty corner of the contest, when Claire Hourihan (East Amherst, N.Y.) banged home the equalizer with no time left in regulation.
For Hourihan, it was her 13th goal of the season, tying her with two others for the most goals in a single season in school history.
Both goalkeepers had excellent performances, with Courtney Osier (South Dennis, Mass.) turning away 10 shots, while Lauren Zarrella denied 13 Stonehill scoring chances.
Southern Connecticut is now in sole possession of third place in the Northeast-10 at 8-6 overall and 8-4 in league play, while Stonehill slips into a tie for fourth with St. Michael's at 7-5 in conference action and 7-6 overall.
Stonehill returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Waltham to take on second place Bentley, a team currently riding a seven game winning streak.
