Ladino Leads Skyhawks To 5-0 Win
Easton, Mass. - Junior Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass.) scored two goals less than two minutes apart late in the first half to help Stonehill take control of a scoreless game and cruise to a 5-0 win over visiting American International on Tuesday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium.
Ladino, who is known more for her playmaking ability than her scoring, got the No. 9 Skyhawks on the board at the 22:13 mark with help from classmate Claire Hourihan (East Amherst, N.Y.).
A short time later she outraced the Yellow Jacket defense and beat American International netminder Kim Steiner one-on-one for her sixth goal of the season.
Stonehill, which controlled the first half of play, out-shot the visitors, 10-3 in the first half and 22-6 for the match.
The Skyhawks tacked on three goals in the second half led by two from Hourihan - both off feeds from senior Kerri Sullivan (Goffstown, N.H.) - and another from Laura Nimon (Gardiner, Maine) to secure their eighth win of the season.
Courtney Osier (South Dennis, Mass.) played the first 67 minutes, making three saves, before giving way to senior Sarah Piper (Hollis, N.H.) who turned away a single shot. Steiner meanwhile, sent back nine Stonehill attempts in her 70 minutes of action for the Yellow Jackets, who fall to 4-12 overall and 4-11 in Northeast-10 action.
Hourihan's big day (two goals, two assists) helped her inch closer to two school records. Her 16 goals this season are the second most in a single season, one shy of Caitlin Gleason's record of 17 which was set back in 2004. With 38 points (16 goals, six assists) through the first 15 games this season, she is one point short of the school record for points in a single season of 39, also set by Gleason in 2004.
The Skyhawks will play their last regular season home game of the season on Thursday when they host Merrimack, a team they defeated 6-1 earlier this year.
