Back Ay W.B.
Following a last second loss at Northeast-10 opponent,
Pace, Stonehill gets back in action with another Friday night
contest at home, this time against Southern Connecticut.
In Control
The visiting Owls are 11-0 all-time against the Skyhawks,
including last year's 41-6 win in New Haven.
Owls On Their Perch
The Owls have dealt the Skyhawks four shutouts in their 11 all-time
victories over Stonehill.
Bird On A Wire
During a stretch of meetings between 2004 and 2007, the Skyhawks
were held scoreless for 11 quarters as the Owls racked up 107
points.
Rainy Days
In their last visit to Stonehill, a driving rainstorm kept the
score low and the Owls escaped with a 14-0 win on two second half
touchdowns.
Week Three Karma?
Last season, the Skyhawks were 0-10 all-time against C.W. Post when
they defeated the Pioneers, 12-7, in the third week of the season.
Adjusting Nicely
Senior wideout turned defensive back turned wideout, Chris
Palmer (Santa Barbara, Calif.) has moved seamlessly into
his new role. He leads the Skyhawks in catches (6) and receiving
yards (69). He had five grabs and two touchdowns in the loss at
Pace.
Not The First Time
Chris Palmer has had multiple touchdown receptions in a
contest before. He registered a three touchdown game against C.W.
Post as a sophomore in 2006.
Holland's Chance
Senior fullback Bob Holland (North Andover, Mass.)
went the entire 2007 season without a getting a chance to carry the
ball. In the loss at Pace, he had two opportunities gaining four
yards.
Parsons' Plan
Cruz Parsons (Signal Hill, Calif.) has 26 career touchdown
passes and only 12 interceptions. He is currently on a streak of 38
straight passes without a miscue. This streak pales in comparison
to the 120 pass stretch he had during the 2007 season.
Miner 49er
Sophomore defensive back Anthony Tomasz
(Hopkinton, Mass.) had a career day in the loss at Pace. He made
eight tackles and had his first career interception which he
returned 49 yards.
Too Good To Be True
Sophomore defensive back Steven Good (Green
Harbor, Mass.) had his first career sack in the loss at Pace.
Stephan Steppin' Up
Freshman Stephan Neville (Foxborough, Mass.)
continues to make a huge impact. After collecting the game
clinching interception in the win over Wagner, he returned the
opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown in the eventual 28-24 loss
at Pace. For his efforts (he added two solo tackles) he was named
Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week.
It's Been Awhile
Stephan Neville's selection as Northeast-10 Rookie
of the Week marks the first time a Stonehill student-athlete has
captured the weekly honor since Cruz Parsons was
tabbed for the award on October 5, 2005.
Return To Sender
Stephan Neville's kickoff return for a touchdown in the
loss at Pace is the second kickoff return for a score in the past
four games for the Skyhawks. Jeff Payne (West
Haven, Conn.) had a 74-yard score when Stonehill defeated Merrimack
last season.
What Could Have Been
That total could've been three. In the win over the
Wagner, Torrey Price (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.)
returned a punt 63 yards for an apparent touchdown but the score
was nullified by a blocking in the back penalty. Dan
Cahill was the last Stonehill player to return a punt for
a touchdown on November 11, 1995.
By George!
Senior defensive end George Whetstone (Westwood,
Mass.) had a career game in the loss at Pace. He had eight tackles
(three and a half for loss), two sacks and a pass breakup.
1,000 Yards And Runnin'
Senior Jeff Payne is closing in on 1,000
career rushing yards. Entering Friday's contest he has 923 yards on
213 carries (4.3 average). After his sophomore season, Payne had
just 58 yards on 24 career carries.
Program First
In its 2008 season opener, Stonehill defeated Division
I-AA Wagner, 14-13, for its first-ever win over a Football
Championship Subdivision team.
Clock Killing Drive
Trailing 13-7 entering the fourth quarter, Stonehill held the ball
for 11:05 of the final frame. Most of that time was gobbled up
during a 20-play, 80-yard drive that took 10:32 off the clock and
resulted in the winning score.
Drivin' It Home
In the loss at Pace, the Skyhawks had a similar drive but it took
much less time. Trailing 21-17, Stonehill went 89 yards in 12 plays
in just 2:37. The Skyhawks scored on a 29-yard pass from
Cruz Parsons to Chris Palmer with
34 seconds left.
Cory's Story
After going the entire 2007 season without a catch, junior wide
receiver Cory Wright (Manchester, N.H.) had a
10-yard reception, (the second of his career) in the season-opening
win over Wagner and had two key grabs for 44 yards in the final
drive of the loss at Pace.
Third Quarter Lull
In Stonehill's two contests thus far this season, no
points have been scored in the third quarter.
Career Days
In last year's matchup with the Owls, Greg Sanzari
(Centerport, N.Y.) made a career-high 14 tackles, while classmate
Jon Kilborn (North Dartmouth, Mass.) had six
stops, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
