Easton, Mass. - Quarterback Jon Kaloyanides (Cranston, R.I.) was named Stonehill's 2008-2009 McGowan Scholar and was awarded a tuition scholarship from the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund it has been announced.
The William G. McGowan Charitable Fund was named after the man who founded MCI Communications Corporation in 1968. Based in Chicago, Illinois, the Fund was established to realize - and to enlarge - the potentials that McGowan foresaw in the future of the young.
The McGowan Scholars program provides selected colleges and universities with scholarships to help students who wish to pursue a business education.
McGowan scholars are chosen on the basis of several factors, including:
- their high level of academic achievement as a business major
- a faculty member's recommendation
- the quality of a personal essay, as well as an essay on telecommunication pioneer William G. McGowan.
"I owe this opportunity to my experience at Stonehill College, along with my work ethic," he says. "Stonehill provides more than a degree and more than academic knowledge; it offers the means to transfer the academic experience to everyday life."
A Finance major and Economics minor, Kaloyanides has been named to the Dean's list every semester since Fall of 2005, the year he enrolled at Stonehill. In his award-winning personal essay, he says that he discovered an "overwhelming interest in business" early in his academic career.
"This interest extended to every facet of an organization, especially looking at different businesses and trying to dissect either why they are successful or why they are failing," he explains.
Whether through the Financial Management Association or class projects, Kaloyanides and his fellow students enjoy taking "dry runs" at the stock market or looking at present day companies to interpret their financial decisions and discern their financial future.
"I have always enjoyed comparing and contrasting different ways of operating a business. Stonehill has provided me with the opportunity to perform these tasks," he says.
"Going beyond the classroom," he adds, "I have gathered other key ingredients to be able to succeed in the future." Among those key ingredients are teamwork and time management, both of which, he says, he has learned as a member of Stonehill's football team.
"This experience has provided me with different characteristics that are important in the business world," notes Kaloyanides. "Football has given me the ability to manage my time effectively both on and off the field," he adds.
Many members of the Business Administration faculty recommended Kaloyanides as the 2008-2009 McGowan Scholar. Among them were Chairperson Debra Salvucci and Associate Professor of Business Administration J. Richard Anderson.
