TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS TO FOLLOW
WALTHAM, Mass.-- Senior Kyle Goodwin (Gloucester, Mass.) hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass, while fellow senior Sean Smith (Andover, Mass.) scored what proved to be the winning touchdown on a 59-yard interception return with just under three minutes remaining as Bentley posted a 13-7 Northeast-10 Conference football victory over Stonehill Saturday afternoon at Bentley Field.
The two teams played scoreless football until the final 10-plus minutes of action, as Goodwin hauled in his score from sophomore quarterback John White (Kingston, Mass.) with 10:27 remaining to give the host Falcons (4-4, 3-4 Northeast-10) a 7-0 advantage. White's 24-yard scramble on a 3rd-and-10 play kept that drive alive for Bentley, which added what would prove to be a key insurance score with 2:21 remaining when Smith picked off his pass and returned it for a touchdown, but the hosts' extra point attempt was blocked. Sophomore quarterback Jon Kaloaynides (Cranston, R.I.) needed two plays on the ensuing drive for the visiting Skyhawks (1-7, 1-6 Northeast-10) to get in the end zone, as he hooked up with junior Dana Burris (Boston, Mass.) on a 25-yard touchdown pass with 1:42 remaining, as the throw was Kaloyanides's sixth scoring pass of the season and Burris's first career touchdown reception. Stonehill forced Bentley into a punt and got the ball back with 27 seconds remaining at midfield, but Kaloyanides's pass in the end zone on the final play of the game was intercepted by Falcon senior Paul Tetzel (Millbury, Mass.) as time expired.
Both teams had a pair of chances to get on the board in the first half of action, as a Bentley field goal attempt was denied on a bad snap and junior Sean Donahue's (Plymouth, N.H.) 34-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the half went wide left. Donahue just missed a 33-yarder on the first Skyhawk drive of the second half, and the game remained scoreless until all of the action in the final 10-plus minutes.
Bentley, which survived four fumbles by recording four interceptions on the afternoon, amassed 283 yards of total offense, as White completed 15-of-27 passes for 160 yards to go with his touchdown, with Goodwin hauling in five receptions for 75 yards. Junior J.J. Sullivan (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and freshman Luis Cotto (Waltham, Mass.) also combined for 95 yards on the ground for the Falcons but were responsible for three of the hosts' four lost fumbles.
Kaloyanides completed 18-of-33 passes for 155 yards to go with his touchdown in the setback for Stonehill, as senior Paul Stone (Somerville, Mass.) hauled in a career-high eight receptions for 80 yards. Burris added six catches for 44 yards on the day for the Skyhawks, who received 37 rushing yards from senior Cliff Mason II (Santa Ana, Calif.).
Sophomore Peter Manns (Cambridge, Mass.) paced Bentley defensively with eight total tackles (three solo), as the Falcons recorded four sacks to go with their four interceptions. Sophomore Jeff Cuqua (Walpole, Mass.) was brilliant on the defensive side for Stonehill, as he led the Skyhawks with nine total tackles (six solo), forced three fumbles while recovering two and also recorded a pass break-up in the secondary. Sophomore George Whetstone (Westwood, Mass.) added seven total tackles for the visitors, while Donahue posted six solo stops and recorded a 40.1 yard average on eight punts, including a career-long 63-yarder.
Stonehill hosts Southern Connecticut in its Northeast-10 home finale next Saturday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium beginning at Noon, while Bentley heads to Manchester, N.H. next Saturday afternoon to take on Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 match-up that also kicks off at Noon.
