May 5, 1990 - Sharon Birnie, a junior on the Stonehill College Equestrian team, became the first Stonehill student to ride in the intercollegiate national competition.  Birnie, who competed in Novice Jumping, placed second at both the regionals and zone competition to earn her spot at nationals.

MEDWAY, Mass.-- The Stonehill equestrian team collected its third straight victory on Sunday afternoon by taking high point champion honors at the Wellesley Intercollegiate Horse Show, as the Skyhawks bested reserve champion UMass Dartmouth by one point (38-37) in the final standings.

Sophomores Jenna Boyd (Middleton, Mass.) and Michelle Pare (North Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) captured first place in the walk trot and walk trot canter, respectively, for Stonehill, which also received a first place performance from freshman Stephanie Perry (West Wareham, Mass.) in the intermediate flat. Sophomore Becca Clifford (Rehoboth, Mass.) was second in the novice fences for the Skyhawks and qualified for the upcoming IHSA Regional championships in the process, while sophomore Jamie Marsalise (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.) added a second place performance in the open fences for Stonehill, which now trails Wheaton by three points in the IHSA Zone 1, Region 4 standings.

The Skyhawks will be idle for two weeks, as Stonehill will host its own annual spring intercollegiate horse show on Sunday, March 25th at Dry Water Farm in Stoughton, Mass. beginning at 9:00 a.m.
