White fires eight one-hit shutout innings to lead Skyhawks to win
White, a member of the Tino Martinez Award Preseason "Watch List", was dominant in his first start on the mound this season (1-0) as he allowed just one hit over eight shutout innings of work, striking out ten and walking none for Stonehill. Senior righthander Brenden Shepard (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet) worked around a pair of hits in the ninth to earn his second save of the season, striking out one batter.
Junior Michael Magnussen (Carver, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy), who threw out the runner at second on Chestnut Hill's lone hit of the day, helped pace the Stonehill offense as he hit 2-for-4 with an RBI. Classmate Rich McHugh (Pembroke, Mass./Thayer Academy) was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Stonehill scored both runs in the game in the top of the eighth as senior Nick Nardacci (Bethlehem, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) led off with a single and advanced to second on a one out walk by classmate Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk). McHugh drove Nardacci in with an RBI single, before Magnussen capped the scoring with another RBI single to plate Bruno.
Stonehill (3-2, 0-0 NE-10) is off until its spring break trip when it opens with a non-conference doubleheader against Assumption College in Auburndale, Fla., starting at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks first home game is scheduled for Friday, March 25, when they host Post University for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
