Skyhawks Fail To Score In Loss To Panthers
Melbourne, Fla. - Stonehill failed to put a run across the plate for the second straight contest, as Florida Tech pitcher Mike Piazza went the distance in the Skyhawk 12-0 defeat at the hands of the Panthers.
Piazza held Stonehill to just three hits over nine innings of work, while the Skyhawks pitching staff allowed 12 runs to cross the plate. Eric Haughn (Pembroke, Mass.) made his first career start for Stonehill, going four innings and strking out two while giving up six earned runs before being replaced by sophomore Joey Santabara (Danvers, Mass.).
Santabara allowed three runs with a strikeout in his two innings of work. Freshman Michael White (Lisbon, N.H.) came in for the final two frames, and sent two panthers down swinging but also gave up three earned runs.
The Skyhawks gave up five runs in the first two innings before freshman Kyle Shepard (Boxford, Mass.) got the team's first hit in the top of the third. However, any chance of a scoring opportunity was ended when Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H.) hit into a double play a few pitches later.
In the sixth, Stonehill would have their best opportunity to score. After a Davis flyout, Scott Hackett (Bangor, Maine) reached first on an infield single and advanced to second on a single by Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.). The Skyhawks loaded the bases on Javier Guzman's (San Juan, P.R.) fielder's choice, however a double play ended any chance at putting a run across the board.
Stonehill drops to 0-2 with the loss. Looking for their first victory of the year, the Skyhawks matchup with C.W. Post tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
