The scope of the women's cross country program at Stonehill College has extended to the national landscape under the direction of Head Coach Karen Boen, as she has taken a Skyhawk program that was near the bottom of the conference standings to a perennial regional and national power over the last six seasons.
Boen led Stonehill to five straight Northeast-10 Conference titles from 2000 through 2004 and has produced 27 all-conference runners along the way, including three Northeast-10 and NCAA New England Runners of the Year. Additionally, Boen's squad has copped five of the last six NCAA Division II Northeast Regional titles while advancing to each of the last six to the NCAA Division II National Championships, as the Skyhawks posted three straight top 22 team finishes in Chino, Calif. (2000), Slippery Rock, Pa. (2001) and Ashland, Ohio (2002) before notching its highest finish ever at the national championships with a 10th place team standing in 2003. Boen has also coached a pair of Skyhawk All-America performers in Meghann Shanahan 05 and Dianna Chivakos 05, as Chivakos took All-America accolades in the 2004 NCAA championships. Boen's crew has finished the year ranked 20th in the National Cross Country Coaches' Association Division II final national poll in five of the last six campaigns, and her team has also excelled in the classroom, ranking among the top squads in the NCCCA All-Academic teams in each of the last five seasons.
Boen, who also serves as Stonehill's Head Men's Cross Country and Head Men's and Women's Track and Field Coach, is a 1979 graduate of Bridgewater State College where she earned a Bachelor of Science in exercise physiology and participated in both cross country, and track and field. Upon graduation from Bridgewater State, she attended graduate school at East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University, where she studied cardiac rehabilitation. Boen then became an avid distance runner. Early in her running career she was sponsored by Reebok and is currently a member of the Boston Athletic Association, a team she has represented at four national cross country championships. As a master, she has continued to enjoy competing and after a long lay-off from track and field was able to capture the 1998 National Masters title by winning the 3000 meters at the indoor championships held at the Reggie Lewis Facility in Boston.
Karen and her husband, Carl, reside in Stoughton, Mass. with their three daughters: Courtney, Colleen and Molly.
In four seasons, Head Coach Karen Boen has established the Stonehill men's cross country program as one to be reckoned with at both the regional and national levels, as the Skyhawks have become two-time champions of the Northeast-10 Conference and added their first-ever title at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship two weeks ago . Stonehill successfully defended its Northeast-10 Conference title with a five-point victory over UMass Lowell on October 23rd before besting the River Hawks by 34 points in Northeast Regional competition.
After quickly launching Stonehill as the top women's cross country program in the conference and region over a five-year period, Boen can now say the same about the men's squad, as the Skyhawks earn their second championship this fall after finishing second in the Northeast-10 championship in 2002 and 2003. A total of 19 individuals have earned either all-Northeast-10 or all-NCAA regional accolades under Boen's tutelage on the men's side, including a pair of All-America performers in Mario Fraioli 04 and Sean McKeon 05, and she was recognized by her peers as the 2005 NCAA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year for her efforts this fall.

In eight seasons of coaching at Stonehill College, Karen Boen has made a name for herself and Stonehill College Track & Field in the Northeast-10. Voted as the Northeast-10 Women's Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year two years ago, Boen has turned all of her teams into perennial contenders in both conference action and throughout the region. Last season seven athletes and one relay team garnered All- New England honors as seven records alone were set at the 2005 New England Championships, as Richard Gerry '08 set a school record in the 800 Meters during the 2005 IC4A Championships. With Boen in charge, the Stonehill College Track and Field program is constantly reaching new heights, as witnessed by the 19 school records that fell during the 2003-2004 season. In the same sesaon, two Skyhawk athletes and a 4x100 relay team qualified for the prestigious IC4A Championpship, while senior Dianna Chivakos '05 ran all the way to the NCAA National Championship in both the 3,000 and the 5,000 and Kelly Chaisson '07 was heralded as the Northeast-10 Outdoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year.
