EASTON, Mass. (June 27, 2017) – Stonehill College's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee was recognized at the Northeast-10 Conference's annual awards banquet, held at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough recently, for its fundraising efforts towards the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Stonehill SAAC led the NE10's fundraising efforts by bringing in $6,600 to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which is the primary charity for NCAA Division II. SAAC held its first Rock-a-Thon, which raised over $6,000, as well as its annual "Into the Bleachers" campaign throughout the academic year, bringing in a total of $6,600 for the year.
The Rock-a-Thon involved six purple rocking chairs and they were constantly in motion on April 28 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Members of the Stonehill community, including various departments and athletic teams split time slots throughout the day with the hopes of hosting a Make-A-Wish reveal on campus during the upcoming academic year. The Rock-a-Thon also attracted the efforts of Auburn Middle School, which raised $800 towards the total by selling Easter Egg-Grams.
Stonehill SAAC was led in 2016-17 by chairperson Tommy Farrell (Toms River, New Jersey/Donovan Catholic), from the football team, vice chairperson Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport), from the cross country and track & field programs, and advisor Cindy MacDonald, the College's senior associate director of intercollegiate athletics.
With 21 intercollegiate sports, after announcing the addition of women's golf for the 2017-18 academic year, Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. Stonehill has finished in the top three of the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents' Cup standings for overall athletic performance 13 straight years, following a second place finish in 2017. The Skyhawks have received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first six years of the program's existence of honoring institutions with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. Stonehill has earned a 96% ASR by the NCAA three straight years, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for sixth among all NCAA Division II institutions, with 11 Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%. In addition, the Skyhawks are ranked third in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Power Rankings for Division II used to assess the academic and athletic standards of all NCAA and NAIA athletic programs.
