November 9, 1997 - Senior Pam Kelly played her last regular season volleyball game for Stonehill College, a 3-2 victory over Bentley College.  Kelly ended her collegiate career as Stonehill's all-time leader in assists (2,841) and digs (1,466).  Kelly led Stonehill to berths in the ECAC Division II in 1996 and 1997.

While I was slaving away stacking records in the athletic office today, there was much talk of the controversial Bentley game. In case you Superfans haven’t been keeping up with us, our game at Bentley last weekend is technically suspended. If the 7 on 7 double overtime wasn’t enough field hockey for one day, the game advanced into penalty strokes. After three hours of play I started to wonder whether or not I was actually in a track meet. Even the fans were tired at this point but they were still cheering like champs. My parents were the ones trying to start a band in the bleachers. Everyone loves a little cowbell. Anyway, the first round of penalty stokes ended with the score still tied. From here, we went into a sudden death stroke round, which we didn’t win.

But thanks to Big Brother NCAA, Shelly told us on Monday that we didn’t actually lose this game. Being a psych major, I immediately recognized that Shelly was in denial. We obviously lost, the other team scored more points than us. As if field hockey isn’t already the most confusing sport, our intricate rules have even managed to stump the officials. The second round of penalty strokes is not supposed to be sudden death but a full round of 5 for 5 strokes. So we’re heading back to Waltham today to finish the longest game in the history of field hockey. So what happens if we’re still tied after penalty strokes? At this point, I’m pretty sure the mascots duke it out. Yeah Ace.

I can’t forget to mention that this is Bentley, our biggest rival. Winning this game isn’t just unfinished business. A win after this round of strokes will propel us into a third seed position in the conference.

But the news of a second chance at Bentley was only the beginning of a good week for our team. Besides the two solid wins over AIC and Merrimack, Thursday night was also our senior night, giving the underclassmen a chance to write poems and draw pictures of our seniors. Although we have a good bunch of games left in the season, senior night gave us a chance to appreciate Kerri, Laura and Piper. I’m really glad I got to play with Laura, a former high school rival. Hopefully we’ll pull in another Maine-iac so I can still share my Maine stories with someone who cares. Piper took a couple years off but we’re so glad to have her back for one last year. We’ll forever be entertained by her Australia stories. And despite the steroid allegations, I got to play another year with Kerri “I-can-school-you-with-my-eyes-closed” Sullivan. I’m still convinced that her pre-game dance moves are the reason for our success.

Overlooked by senior night was Claire’s eighteenth goal this season. She slammed a rocket home in the Merrimack game on Thursday to break the school record of most goals scored in a season and most points scored in a season. When she isn’t calling corners for our team, Clairebear is putting it in the net.

If we play our game, we’ll close the week with a win at Franklin Pierce—a win that better come in regulation time. Since I’ve been here, Stonehill Field Hockey has a certain fondness for overtime.
